Medicare Supplement Plans in New Jersey (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap, pair with Original Medicare to cover costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that Original Medicare doesn't pay for on its own. I help New Jersey seniors understand how Medigap works and whether it fits their situation, face-to-face and in plain language.

How Medicare Supplement Plans Work

Medicare Supplement plans are sold by private insurers and work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) rather than replacing it. They're built to cover the out-of-pocket costs Original Medicare leaves behind, so your healthcare spending becomes more predictable.

  • Helps cover deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn't pay
  • Lets you see any doctor or specialist nationwide who accepts Medicare, with no provider network
  • Pairs with a separate Part D plan for prescription drug coverage
  • Plan letters (like Plan G) are standardized, so the same lettered plan covers the same benefits regardless of which insurer sells it

When Can You Buy a Medigap Plan in New Jersey?

Medigap has its own enrollment rule, separate from the general Medicare enrollment periods. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, six-month window that starts the first day of the month you're both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

During this window, insurers can't deny you a policy or charge you more because of your health history. Outside of it, getting approved for a Medigap plan may require medical underwriting, and coverage may cost more or be harder to obtain. Because this window doesn't come around again, timing your Part B enrollment carefully matters.

  • When can I buy a Medigap plan in NJ?

Your best opportunity is during your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the first day of the month you turn 65 (or older) and enroll in Medicare Part B. Buying outside this window may involve medical underwriting.

  • What is the best Medigap plan in NJ?

There's no single best plan, since it depends on your health needs, budget, and how much predictability you want in your costs. Comparing plan letters like Plan G against your specific situation is the best way to find the right fit.

Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage: Which Fits You?

Medicare Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans solve different problems. A Medicare Supplement plan pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any doctor or specialist nationwide who accepts Medicare, with no network restrictions, in exchange for a typically higher monthly premium. Medicare Advantage bundles your coverage into one plan with a defined network and often lower premiums. I walk through both options with clients so you can weigh the tradeoffs before deciding.

A few years ago Paul came to my home and pointed out which supplemental insurance would best suit me and my husband which I took his advice and he set up the plan for me united health plan. Not an advantage plan. My husband was in the hospital for 7 months and very very sick. He passed away 6/27/24. Now the bills started rolling in. OMG over 600 pages of bills. Well over a million dollars. You’re wondering how much I had to pay out of my pocket? $50.00! That’s it. Thanks to Paul for his advice I wasn’t left financially broken. My advice: Listen to Paul’s advice. Thank you Angela

Also Managing Prescription Costs or New to Medicare?

If prescription costs are part of what you're weighing alongside a Medigap plan, New Jersey's PAAD program may help. And if you're newly eligible for Medicare, I walk through the full enrollment timeline with every client.
